In these paintings I am able to lose myself in color, line and form without reference to representational content. https://youtu.be/zrA-lk_5pUU
These paintings grew out of my love of painting the figure intuitively. Whole paintings developed from gestures that began cooperating with one another showing me glimpses of figures in places recognized as significant to me. The loosely painted settings and figures achieve transparency and a sense of otherworldliness through the use of scumbling, galzing and a palette ranging from deep inky black to the most delicate pastels. I invite viewers to enter these gardens and find resonant experiences here.
This group of paintings is the result of my long love of literature. Passages from Moby Dick by Herman Melville and The Great Gatsby by F.cCott Fitzgerald frequently echo through my memory and I am always happy when they make themselves manifest in my paintings. “The inessential houses began to melt…” from the glorious last page of Gatsby inspired the group of houses (inessential to all but me) that I have lived in and loved.
These paintings, more than most, tell stories, or suggest stories, that the engaged viewer can r imagine from his or her own experiences. https://youtu.be/zrA-lk_5pUU
